The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he
has made.
The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper
time.
You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in
truth.
He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and
saves them.
The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will
destroy.
My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his
holy name for ever and ever.
Psalm 145:13b-21
When you read the life of David (who wrote this Psalm) you understand
that it would have been just as easy for him to forget that God was good
as it is for us to forget. As a young man, he literally ran for his life
from King Saul. He had done nothing wrong -- nothing to deserve being
hunted down like an animal. As a matter of fact, the reason that his
life was in danger was because he trusted in God!
When he was old, he ran for his life again, running from his own son who
wanted to be king in his place. This time, however, David had brought
the calamity upon himself by his own evil deeds.
In between, David's life was full of sins and triumphs, love and hate
just like ours. David knew he was far from perfect, but he also knew
that God loved him anyway. He knew the world at large was far from
perfect, but he also knew that in the middle of everything, God was good
anyway. Seems like sometimes David had to write these truths down and
say them out loud.
So often we forget what God is like. David is reminding himself (and us)
of these things. We need to be reminded. That's just one good reason for
reading the Bible.
