They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them,
and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the
road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the
road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
(Matthew 21:7-9)
If you grew up in a church, chances are you reenacted "Palm Sunday,"
waving palm branches as you entered the sanctuary in procession. The
praise people gave to Jesus in the reading above was hollow, however.
They didn't have a clue about what He was doing. They were really
praising their own ideas of who He was, because in less than a week they
would be asking for his death on a cross.
That's the trouble -- we often praise who we think He is, and when He
doesn't meet our expectations, we dump him in some small way. Are you
upset with Jesus today? Has He not given you what you need, what you've
asked for, or whatever it is you think He has promised? He has come to
save you, that's for sure; but watch Him, it is seldom in a way that you
expect. Jesus knows what the crowd (and we) don't -- that death always
precedes resurrection.
By the scars,
