Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. (Matthew
5:5)
The main idea here is of a person's strength being under control. (Think
of a bridled horse.) Basically, a follower of Jesus does not throw his
or her weight around at will. This requires security in oneself and
trust in a sovereign God. It is when Christians are insecure about
themselves or their tasks that they begin to bully (either emotionally
or physically) those around them.
God is in control. So often that requires us not getting what we want.
When things aren't going our way, we are tempted to use our power in
order to feel secure. The meek person trusts in God at that point,
following the example of Jesus. (The times God does want us to use our
power seem to be the times we'd rather shrink back!)
The whole earth is the reward of those whose strength is under God's
control. Please remember that when you are being meek and not getting
what you want. You are in line to get more from God than you've ever
dreamed!
In Him,
Mike
