Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they
will be filled. (Matthew
5:6)
You've heard of the "survival instinct" (think food and water). Here,
Jesus is talking about something just as strong. He is talking about the
"do it right" instinct. This word, "righteousness," carries two ideas
within it: both personal righteousness and social justice.
Wanting things to be right, both individually and in society, is a
passion Jesus applauds. The passion is a blessing. The Lord doesn't want
us to just settle. He likes it when we stick up for those who are beat
down. He loves it when we speak up for those who cannot speak for
themselves. He blesses us when we keep trying to do the right stuff in
our own lives!
God wants justice. He wants the innocent protected and the guilty
corrected. Blessed are you when you want that also, both in your own
life and in the world around you.

Mike
