Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (Matthew
5:8)
Jesus is talking about more than morality here. He is talking about the
person who is the same on the inside as on the outside when it comes to
following God. It's about integrity. This can only completely happen in
heaven where, "we shall be like him" and "we shall see Him as He is."
(1John 3:2)
But it starts happening here in this life, I believe. Our integrity
dictates our theology. In other words, we see Jesus in the light of our
own lifestyles. The less bigoted we are, the more we see God loving all
people. The less sexually promiscuous we are, the more we see Jesus
blessing the marriage bed. The more humble we are, the more we
comprehend Jesus' humility. The more forgiving we are, the more we
understand how much God forgives us.
We are tempted to say the opposite -- something like, "When I see God,
then I will become pure in heart." Jesus knows that it doesn't work that
way.
Only by grace,
Mike
